Sessions - PHP & Databases
PD1 - Building Truly Portable Database Applications in PHP![]() Speaker:
Daniel
Convissor (The Analysis and Solutions Company)
Detailed information about the quirks in most of the major database systems and ways to deal with them. This session will cover PEAR DB and MDB2 plus other tools so you can write PHP programs that can be run on nearly any database management system. Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD2 - Objektrelationales Mapping mit PHP 5 und Propel![]() Speaker:
Sebastian
Bergmann (eZ systems AS)
Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD3 - 100,000 SQLite Installations – Lessons Learned![]() Speaker:
Björn
Schotte (Chefredakteur PHP Magazin)
Creating a PHP/MySQL based Web shop that is available through a combination of InstallAnywhere, Microweb and SQLite for CD. We will explore the reasons why SQLite was chosen, what difficulties we explored when converting the MySQL database to SQLite and how we handled more than 100,000 installations in an European rollout of this Web shop in the wild. Future outlook will go to a PHP-in-a-box.exe. Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD4 - Fast, Portable, SQL – Part I![]() Speaker:
Lukas
Smith
The aim of this talk is to provide ideas and hints on how to write portable, yet fast, SQL. The first session will begin by establishing what the SQL standard is as well how to measure performance. Following we will look how databases store data and what choices affect performance. Moving on we will discuss how to speed up simple searches. Finally we will examine how to optimize sorting and aggregations. Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD5 - Fast, Portable, SQL – Part II![]() Speaker:
Lukas
Smith
The aim of this talk is to provide ideas and hints on how to write portable, yet fast, SQL. The second session continues where the previous session has left off by discussing performance factors in joins and subqueries followed up by a look at indexes and contraints. After this we will cover data changes. Towards the end we will dive into locking and how database optimizers work. Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD6 - Java and PHP in the Enterprise![]() Speaker:
Jeremy
Johnstone (Yahoo, Inc.)

Discussion includes setting communications standards, best practices for implementation, and why PHP is one of the best fits for the backend server. Complete with extensive code examples, this is a presentation not to miss. Level: 2 (Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt)
PD7 - Database Virtualization for High Availability and Scalability![]() Speaker:
Emmanuel
Cecchet (Continuent)
Learn how to scale-out the database tier to support more PHP calls with minimal additional hardware investment. Learn how to provide uninterrupted Web site availability, during both planned and unplanned downtime. Add load balancing to your database tier without modifying your application, and learn how the system provides better performance and instant fail-over. Level: 1 (Für alle Teilnehmer)
