Free Software Innovation Unit (UWC)

The Free Software Innovation Unit based at the University of the Western Cape is primarily involved in creating an open source e-learning platform called Kewl.NextGen. The software is built on an MVC framework called KINKY, which is a recursive acronym for KINKY is Not Kewl Yet, with Kewl being the Knowledge Environment for Web based learning. Kewl.NextGen is part of a collaborative network of partner institutions throughout Africa, and one of the project goals is to promote collaborative PHP development, as well as the transfer of skills and knowledge sharing in order to promote free software and e-learning throughout the continent. Currently we have partners in a number of institutions around Africa including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal and Kenya.

Hardened-PHP-Project

The Hardened-PHP Project maintains the Hardening Patch for PHP, an open-source addition to the PHP core that enables a number of security features and prevents exploits against your PHP applications.
The members of the project team have authored several advisories for PHP and PHP applications such as Serendipity, phpMyAdmin, Drupal and others, and are strong advocates for PHP security. We offer security consultancy and application audits for companies and open source projects (at discounted rates).
