How fast can a full web API be implemented with Node.js? In this workshop we will explore the answer to this question. Node.js and its extensive ecosystem solve many standard tasks, allowing you to focus on the essentials, i.e. your business logic. You just need to know which packages, frameworks, and libraries you can access and how they work.
Content & Process
Node.js has established itself as a platform for web services in recent years and is suitable both as a basis for small prototypes and for extensive applications. Regardless of whether you implement your application as a monolith or in the interplay of several microservices, Node.js has now proven itself in each of these forms – so it’s definitely worth taking a look behind the scenes of developing such an application. By the end of this workshop, you will have a full-fledged Node.js backend and know how to customize and extend it.
– Installation and General Architecture: In this first part, you will learn how to set up your application, how to build the general file and directory hierarchy, and what features Node.js brings to web application development.
– REST interfaces with Express: Express has been the most popular web application framework for Node.js for many years, which is clearly reflected in the still steadily increasing download numbers. In the second part of the workshop, we will implement a simple REST interface with Express, which will form the basis for the rest of the workshop.
– File upload, validation and authentication: Express is almost as old as Node.js itself. Therefore, a very active ecosystem has formed around the framework, providing you with numerous solutions to everyday problems in the form of packages. We enrich our application with possibilities for file upload, validation of incoming requests as well as authentication.
– A look at Nest.js: Express is, of course, far from the only framework for Node.js. Another solution that has become increasingly popular in recent years is Nest.js. Nest.js can be used together with Express, but also together with Fastify to implement well-structured applications. We will look at the architecture and principles of Nest.js and implement a simple interface with it.
